Institute on Medicine as a Profession

Making Professionalism a Field and a Force

Grantees

The Institute on Medicine as a Profession is pleased to announce the winners of the first annual selections for the Education and Training Initiative. All three primary faculty members are former Physician Advocacy Fellows.

The “Leadership in Advocacy Block” (LAB) will be led by Dr. Michele David at Boston Medical Center. The project will expose residents and students to many aspects of physician advocacy, including strategies to affect change, legislative advocacy skills, media skills, and coalition-building skills, as well as reflection on how these are inextricably and necessarily linked with clinical experiences. The initiative’s components include individual work in a primary care continuity clinic, didactic sessions, community experiences, reflection sessions, and an advocacy project.

“Advocating for Health in the Community” will be led by Dr. Patricia Flanagan at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The project will expand the current rotation required for pediatric interns to include other learners, who together will work in clinical settings with underserved populations. Through many interactive activities including the Advocacy Bus Tour and small group projects, learners will better understand the communities with which they work and the importance of the service aspects of physician professionalism.

The Physician Advocacy Training Across Three New Disciplines will be led by Dr. Jeffrey Kaczorowski at the University of Rochester. The project is a two-week introductory teaching block for PGY2 residents followed by protected time throughout the rest of their residency to work with vulnerable, underserved, or traditionally disenfranchised populations through clinical care. Learners will work with a primary community-based partner and gain skills in cross-cultural communications, media communications, and interdisciplinary and community partnerships.
