Health Information Technology and Medical Professionalism

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJ) and IMAP collaborated to explore professionalism in the new information age. A conference convened by David Rothman, PhD and David Blumenthal, MD, focused on the challenges and opportunities that current and future technologies will pose for professionalism.

Although there is a considerable literature on information technology and health care, its impact on professionalism has yet to receive sustained attention. The discussion, held as part of the as part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Policy Investigator Awards Conference, resulted in a volume of eight essays to be published by Rutgers University Press in Fall 2010. The resulting book, entitled Medical Professionalism in the Information Age, will help fill the gap, advancing policy analysis and practice.
