IMAP Authors Reveal Serious Gaps in Medical Journals' Disclosure Policies

On Monday, Sept. 13th, the Archives of Internal Medicine published an important article by IMAP's Susan Chimonas, Zachary Frosch and David Rothman entitled "From Disclosure to Transparency: The Use of Company Payment Data." Click here to read the piece (may require subscription).

The article has received major news coverage, including the New York Times, USA Today, Reuters, UPI, and several newsletters and blogs. According to Duff Wilson's page B1-fronting article in the September 14th New York Times, "the study compared major payments to consultants by orthopedic device companies with financial disclosures the consultants later made in medical journal articles, and found them lacking in public transparency." Click here to read the New York Times article.

The Boston Globe published an editorial on September 17th discussing the piece and echoing IMAP's viewpoint.  Click here to read the Globe editorial.

Both the original article and the resulting news coverage help to shed much-needed light on this important issue, and may act as an effective lever for change.
